Folks, this may have been asked a long time ago?

Why did the Soviets name their tubes the way they did?

Eg. IN-x are nixies and I presume IN-1 were the first in development?

IV-x are mainly VFDs, with the occasional numitron style thrown in for
'good measure'?

Are the numbers given due to chronological development or for some other
reason? IV-4 and IV-17 are essentially identical, different factories?
Anyone know of a repository of this info anywhere?

Cheers,

Nick
