The Chinese scammers are doing this very much on purpose! They print up and actively sell FAKE ICs that are nothing but the plastic DIP package and a lead frame, and they'll stencil any numbers on it that they think they can use to dupe an unsuspecting buyer out of their money with. I have caught SEVERAL of them doing this! Fortunately, every time this has happened to me I always get all of my money back. I am quite sure it is the same sort of a deal with the LED displays being called "Nixie Tubes". They will very frequently also call VFDs "nixies". There are a LOT of fraudsters and outright criminals out there folks. And the longer we allow them to exist, the more they will proliferate. These criminals need to be held accountable for their crimes.
