It was Hari krishna Anandhan who said at the right time 28.08.2008 13:29 the following words:
This one sentence is tricky, I would remove it but didn't dare to:
'''Activities''' are a "more casual" term for things that range from
organized content like projects (which have deadlines, tasks and resources)
to adhoc grouping of apps and widgets for a purpose (like in virtual
desktops).

Perhaps a little history can help here : Activities in KDE have their
existence based on 'virtual desktops', where user forms adhoc grouping
of apps and widgets. We are currently planning to extend the concept
to cover projects also, where user can just add deadlines, tasks and
resources to an existing 'virtual desktop' (visually) and can use it
as a project with associated apps, etc
ok, that was important to know for me.

I tried to match it to the scientific vocabulary and found this ad-hoc:

I added a reference to Mary Czerwinski's "Scalable Fabric" in the wiki and what we can learn from it. (with science, the important thing is not to read the paper compeltly but only the conclusions :-) btw: her group is from Microsoft research, but don't shunn her because of M$,
they are world-class scientists and leading in the field.
(I know her from conferences and drank coffee with her in Kaiserslautern)

They call it "tasks" instead of activities, but now that I know the meaning,
I like our understanding of "Activities"

best
