Hi All

I have been out of touch for a few days and will be leaving for vacation
Monday, August 24 and returning September 8. While I will be checking my
emails occasionally, I may not be in touch often until after my return from
vacation.

Leo, as to expressing my preference for your proposed hosting solutions, I
will defer opinion to those of you more familiar with the options and your
current operating environment.

I am not yet familiar enough with your organization (and that of OSCAF.org )
and its dynamics to fully understand exactly what the job duties are or will
be. Please help me to understand my role and duties by providing a brief
job description of duties and a monthly time estimate for each such duty.
Please also emphasize the expected response time/cycle for each so I better
understand the urgency of each from your collective perspective.

What are your list sizes (and when combined, unique members total). What is
the current monthly communications volume?

I will be happy to join OSCAF.org, just tell me how. My first glance at the
sight did not reveal how to enroll as an “individual” (especially in terms
of selecting the “individual” membership fee option), so how do you advise
that I proceed with enrollment?

When was Semantic Desktop Org established?

Who shall I contact, to get started, when I return from vacation?

Finally, I would like to acquire a list of all who are actively involved in
the governing and administering the web site, and perhaps a little something
about their role in this, so that I can get to know everyone.

Thanks

Looking forward to serving the group and growing the website, upon my
return.

Hi Stanley,

SMW is a good idea.

Two solutions:

"Our own"
Stanley manages the server in coordination with Sven Ruby.

"Semweb.org"
We redirect www.semanticdesktop.org to
http://semanticweb.org/wiki/SemanticDesktop

Independent of that:
Stanley, if you want, you can be our "community manager". It would be good
if you join OSCAF.org as individual member, we exclude you from member fees
in exchange for worktime :-)

please express your preferences:
http://www.doodle.com/frdk3mk5i4kwaw3t

The second solution, "semweb.org" would manage our limited resources better.
We could even reuse the existing SMW installation at semanticweb.org, which
is maintained by one of the main developers, Markus Krötzsch.
(disclaimer: I have been drinking a lot of beer with Denny Vrandecic on
conferences and a little less with Markus Krötzsch, so I trust those guys to
host it right)
http://semanticweb.org/wiki/semanticweb.org:About
This would allow us to interlink our data with the existing semantic web
data, without having the need to create a new installation.

In both solutions, Stanley could serve as community contact

It was Stanley Gould who said at the right time 13.08.2009 00:33 the
following words:

All,

I recommend using the free software titled "Semantic-MediaWiki" (download
from: http://semantic-mediawiki.org/). this is open source software with an
extensive body of developers creating extensions.

Here is why I recommend this software for the semantic desktop domain...

I will be installing and populating this software platform to capture
everything (laws, regulations, policies, best practices, vendor resources,
case studies, links to all other related web resources, etc.) pertaining to
a small industry of Community Managers (Homeowner Association managers).

I am currently working to build a semantic IUI, that serves as a desktop
portal through which all other applications are launched, and within which
the user's state is always maintained and logged for user and management
oversight purposes.

My goal is to convert user from applications and initiating the step-by-step
document cycle functions, to writing and using "intelligent tasks",
sequenced and bundled into "procedures' that are in turn bundled into
"Projects" that change the paradigm from being a desktop user to a workflow
designer and operator, where application interfaces and the directory tree
disappear, as all I/O is viewed through the portal framework.

I digress to say "what better way is there to serve our Semantic
Desktoppers?

I will volunteer to serve on the team as a co-manager. We are all very
busy, but by adopting the proper tools to crawl, convert and update, the
cost to grow and maintain a world-class semantic wiki should continue to
drop, so long as there remains a small but dedicated group working to this
end.

@Sven Ruby:
the domain fee of 10EUR/Year will be covered by OSCAF, that is not an issue.
Thats why we have the foundation. Also we could pay the hosting.

@Laur Mõtus:
Excellent!

What we need now is someone with a feeling for community - a "community
manager" - someone who likes to keep our wild bunch of Semantic Desktoppers
together - and can install a wiki+mailinglist
you, dear reader, please do it! think of the fame! all the friends you get!
organizing hacks! its gonna be awesome :-)

so, once someone volunteers we can move to either Sven's server or Laur's
server. I think as a non-for-profit open source and hacking community, we
can fulfill most requirements the Estonian IT college LUG has.

Hello,

Linux User Group of The Estonian IT College ( http://www.itcollege.ee &
http://www.itcollege.ee/?url=overview ) can help with a 1 Gb up/down link
hosting in a secure server room together with administration if we can agree
on the terms recuired from us.
What services would the server require to run (e.g. Apache, Postres, Trac
etc) and what is the size of the server box?

All the best,

Hello Semantic Desktoppers, NEPOMUKs, and OSCAFs,

We have a community site where we have been collecting all known
semanticdesktop implementations and where we have some FAQs about
semanticdesktop and our past workshops in Berlin and Kaiserslautern,
and the scientific workshops.
... this site should move now to our own administration and maintenance.

www.semanticdesktop.org

Really crucial is long-term hosting of this:
www.semanticdesktop.org/ontologies

Besides that, these things would be nice to continue, but since the
community was dormant for long, it could also go to sleep...
* a public Wiki with the past and present workshops, tools,
implementations, ontologies etc...
* contination of the peo...@semanticdesktop.org mailinglist

Who could host this and maintain this site?

We can reuse the server donated by Sven Ruby for OSCAF.org,
but I don't have the time nor skills to long-term maintain a community
software,
I know I screw up things with computers, and a trustable Unix admin
would be better to handle it.

best
Leo
