Hi, First, based on the subject you can see it is on different versions of Linux. Second, I tried with 3 or 4 versions of nmap all the way to the current. Here is what happens.
In a closed network with Alpha Tru64 targets, if you ping them, they respond just fine. If you run a full: nmap -sT -O 192.168.1.1/24 Then it fails saying it CAN'T ping the hosts. BUT, we know that is not true. Now, if you add the -P0 to the test, it works, but I do not understand why the nmap-ping does not work. So, with nessus to run, I have found the ONLY way to get it to scan these targets (or any for that matter) is to DISABLE any of the ping, either ICMP or TCP, since they just refuse to return from nmap. I also tested with fping, which works as does hping. So I am at a loss as to why nmap complains. On a lighter side -- a full nessus scan with ALL tests enabled will not only crash a Tru64 5.0A system, but it also crashes a 5.1 and 5.1A... You would think compaq/hp would have fix these vulnerabilities by now... cheers Kat
