Danny, I had the same trouble with updating our pluggins and wrote the following perl script to deal with the issue. It is basically a wrapper for the "nessus-update-plugins -v " command. It not only cuts a log of the plugins that were new, but the ones that were updated as well. Then there is an option to notify you by email with a description of which plugins were touched.

PS. I know html enabled email is evil, but it is what my management
wanted to see, so the email notification is in html enabled form...if
there is an interest, I could make this an option and have the default
be plain text.
