Ok, I generated a complete set of certificates using OpenSSL and was
able to reproduce the error you received.  And like you guessed, the
resolution involves specifying the passphrase for the client's private
key -- you enter that in the "Password:" field in the "Nesssud host" tab
when you first start the nessus client.  Perhaps you've figured this out
already.

So in sum, the password the nessus client prompts for is used either as
the passphrase for your private key if using public key authentication
or the password for your nessus userid otherwise.
