I've found that the best way to keep up to date (so far) is to use:

http://cvsweb.nessus.org/

It contains the latest up-2-date snapshot of the nessus directory tree.

There is a little tutorial here:

You can also write your own plugins using the NASL scripting language, but I
have not played with it at all.

Apparently I do not have these plugins. I installed from install.nessus.org,

are there other plugin "packs" or whatnot that I should be installing?
