I am currently trying to convince some of my coworkers that
we should use Nessus for vulnerability assessments instead of purchasing
Retina. Unfortunately, none of us
are very happy with the reports that Nessus generates, especially with regards
to sorting. I have looked at nessQuick and while I like the idea of importing the scan
results into a MySQL database, the report that it
comes with is somewhat limited and we don’t really have the expertise to
write a script to generate other reports. I have also looked at the web interface from Inprotect, but I never could get the scans to actually
run. Once again, I really like the
idea of importing the results into a MySQL database,
but since I have not been able to get a scan to run successfully, I have not
been able to view a report generated by this product. Finally, we have looked at NeWT,
but ran into problems with it hanging when scanning some hosts, which I think
has made them question how well it would work for our purposes
. Also, we would like to use
it to scan our internal network to see what the results are like, but cannot
due to limitations in the demo product. (Our internal network is 10.x.x.x class A network, but the demo will only scan a class C network. We cannot even scan a section of the
class A network at a time.) In addition, I really like the price of
Nessus. For the money, I feel it is
a great product. In the future, I hope to be able to create my own add-on to
take care of generating reports, but unfortunately, I currently do not have the
time to do this, or the necessary programming skills. Thanks, Steve Fletcher, A+, MCP, MCSE (NT 4),
