newbie question

why is it i cant get any results from any of my remote scan? its always zero 
results, first i nmap the remote host, after verifying what OS is it and 
what ports are alive, i scan it using nessus, say if its a linux box i only 
enable plugins gain remote shell, gain root remotely and cgi abuses but i 
still cant get any results and i did update the plugins using this command 
as root # wget nessus-update-plugins, 2nd question after the plugins is 
updated do i have to load it in my gui nessus? or i dont have to worry about 
because the plugins is automatically updated, but how do i know if its 
updated? help anyone im new nessus..
