One major reason is when your network topology would limit the scope of
a single nessusd scanning ability.

Others might be more "organizational" where you have a "Windows"
scanner, a "Unix" scanner and a "Network gear" scanner all looking for
different vulnerabilites (to speed up the scans and segregate the result
sets)
