In any case, if you use an off-the-shelf programming language and use
its own networking functions, then you loose the benefits of using a
dedicated language for your plugins.

Whatever language we'd have chosen, we would not have used its API, as
we need to fine-tune every network related function from within Nessus.

Someday, I promise I'll write a lengthy paper explaining why dedicated
languages are good and efficient and allow us to make Nessus evolve very
quickly.
