You may want to consider dumping a single-NIC Nessus box on the outside
and the same on the inside. Throw a wrapper on the external box. I've
done this without issue for years.

Isn't this a security concern?  If your Nessus scanner is compromised, 
it can become a router bypassing your firewall.
