I don't think there's any way to do this without mucking with the source,
and unfortunately I don't know how to do it.

This happens if either the plugin was written in C or the plugin has
been removed / renumbered.  The latter has been happening alot recently,
essentially every time a plugin is revised.

Not really. Some plugins have associated user-contributed notes; eg,

  http://cgi.nessus.org/plugins/dump.php3?id=12209

which may have this information, but the best bet is look at the source.
