You said nothing shows up in the tcpdump logs. That seems odd since nessusd.messages shows ping_host and labrea scanners being launched; I'd expect to see at least the outbound traffic being logged. This suggests a problem with how you're logging; eg, incorrect network interface selected, invalid filter expression, or something like that.
