FWIW, I noticed a change in behavior a while back where if you specify a domain in Credentials section connections to windows machines requiring such failed. If you left domain blank in Credentials section connections to windows machines worked. This use to work just the opposite. Log entries on Windows machines showed the login failure. Don't know if this is what you're dealing with.
