What are the last few lines logged in nessusd.messages when the client
appears to hang (ie, after it reports "attack|<target host ip>|1905|1905")?

Can you run strace against the client pid and see anything interesting
when it appears to hang?

And finally, a silly question perhaps, is write access to the results
file possible?
