Bravo!

No PHD required for Nessus, only the ability to read and inquire.  I agree with the ascertain that commercial software with similar capabilities will equal the cost of a PHD (if not several).  Of the thousands of quality open source software titles available none could be simpler to implement, use, and understand than Nessus.  The complexity of Nessus PALES in comparison to many of the over-priced (and yes, don’t forget maintenance) commercial products.

Many thanks to the individuals that contribute their time, energy, and expertise to the Open Source environment, and specifically Nessus.

Funny you mention that... purchasing a commercial product (which, by the way, can be just as difficult to learn) is about as expensive as obtaining a PHD.  Oh wait, then you have the annual maintenance costs. Make that a dozen PHDs.

By the way, the Syngress Press book, "Nessus Network Auditing" lists for $49.95, and the man pages and other documentation on the web site are free.  All cheaper than PHDs.

At least bagging on excellent, open-source products that resulted from the hard work of numerous uncompensated, unsung and talented individuals is still free, huh?
