Hi, There is an issue with the plugins on your install. It's an easy fix, see the attached. I would recommend registering for the Registered Plugin Code update instead of using the demo key if you wish to use the tool as you would with Nessus.
Regards, -- Dan Daniel Bowman Director of Support & MIS Tenable Network Security mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.tenablesecurity.com/ ARTICLE SUMMARY: NeWT Scans Hang at 80% SYMPTOMS: All scans launched hang at 80% +/- ... It reaches 80% quickly but doesn't progess past 80% even after hours of waiting. RESOLUTION: If the plugin update utility is run it appears to update plugins run correctly but this has not actually occurred as the plugin registration has not been completed. The update is actually only updating with the GPL feed and re-processing the list of plugins in the install. This causes a mismatch in the update process. The logs will indicate only 8000 or so plugins updates. This is an incorrect amount for GPL/Registered Feed/ and Direct feed. The resolution is to enter the correct plugin registration code into NeWT. >From the Windows console: Start... Programs... Tenable Network Security... Tenable NeWT... Product Registration: This brings up a dialog box asking for you to "Enter Product Key Code Here". Enter either your Direct Feed, or Registered Feed, or GPL Feed code here. Click on submit. You should receive a successful registration reply message. If not, recheck your registration code against the code that was sent in reply to your registration. Click on Update Plugins, the update tool will download a new list of plugins and import them into the plugin directory. The scan should no longer hang. ________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Deeds, Chad Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 11:08 To: Timothy Carroll; [email protected] Subject: RE: NeWT Question: NeWT hangs at 98/99% I'm having the same issue with NeWT (fully licensed version) on a WinXP PC. I went ahead and configured Nessus3 on Fedora Core4 and it works without any problems. Not sure if that helps you or not, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one with a scan hanging up when launched from NeWT. - Chad ________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Timothy Carroll Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 8:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: NeWT Question: NeWT hangs at 98/99% Hello! I am demoing NeWT based on a recommendation from a colleague. I am having a problem with NeWT locking up in the middle of a scan. First, I was using the free (class C only) version and when run from my Server 2003 boxes (I tried four different boxes), NeWT would stop somewhere between 30% and 40% when doing the "all but dangerous plugins" scan. I would let it run 2-3 days just to make sure, but it wouldn't budge. It appears to just have hung. If I ran the scan from an XP SP2 workstation, I had no problems. This was an annoyance because the workstations are on a different VLAN (and different class C), so I had to put my workstation on the server VLAN. But I digress. I spoke with sales and got a 30 day demo code to run the full version of NeWT. Now, from Server 2003 it gets to about 98% and hangs. Same symptoms, just further along. I can't try the full version on my XP box because the NeWT registration code is keyed to the machine name. I'm not sure why adding a registration code would change when the program locked up, but it did. But either way, I'd like to run this from one of my Server 2003 boxes because they stay on 24/7 and somebody can't bump the power switch or whatever since it's locked in the server room. Any ideas?
