I've got "ping_hosts"  enabled, but I'm getting the following in my report:
   unknown (ping_host.nasl not launched?)\n\n

If I disable it I get no live hosts at all so it does appear to work, but then I don't understand the above message.

I run a scan like:
/opt/nessus/bin/nessus -c nessusrc -T nbe -xq 127.0.0.1 1241 userid password rangefile.txt outputfile

The nessusrc file has these options in regards to ping :
(at the beginnging of the file)
    ping the remote host = yes
(at the beginning of the file)
    ping_hosts = yes
(at the end of the file)
Ping the remote host[entry]:TCP ping destination port(s) : = 22,25,53,80,256,259,264,900,953,981,1080,1201,2809,2998,3128,4100,5600,9495,18182
    Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Do an ARP ping = no
    Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Do a TCP ping = no
    Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Do an ICMP ping = no
    Ping the remote host[entry]:Number of retries (ICMP) : = 6
Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Do an applicative UDP ping (DNS,RPC...) = no Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Make the dead hosts appear in the report = yes
    Ping the remote host[checkbox]:Log live hosts in the report = yes
