You really do not want to increase max_checks beyond 16, which is
already a very large value (all things compared) -- remember that
max_checks is the maximum number of checks _per host_ so if you have
max_checks = 16 and max_host = 20, you are talking about 320
processes in parallel.
If you start to cross the 10 processes-per host limit, you start
knocking off services extremely quickly. As Ron pointed out, you
really want to increase the max # of hosts being scanned in parallel
instead.
