Carl, I'm running Nessus under both VM server & VM workstation. In my production environment, I run Nessus on RedHat4/VM Server. The host OS being Windows 2003 Server. My test environment is a copy of the same virtual machine, but running under VM Workstation on Windows XP I have set up a while ago a new environment under CentOS5/VM WKS/Windows XP I am currently setting up a new VM (with Nessus and other tools), with Fedora Core 7/VM WKS/Win XP The nice thing with the last version of VM Workstation is that you can migrate from VM WKS to VM SVR without too much hassle !
Technically : no particular issue with any of the above mentioned combos, nor with the conversion/migration process (WKS --> SVR) Performance might be an issue though. Nessus is *much* slower within a VM than if it was running natively under Linux on any hardware platform. I personally choose the VM concept because of the flexibility it offers, whereas performance was not necessarily my top concern.
