Carl,

I'm running Nessus under both VM server & VM workstation.
In my production environment, I run Nessus on RedHat4/VM Server. The host
OS being Windows 2003 Server.
My test environment is a copy of the same virtual machine, but running
under VM Workstation on Windows XP
I have set up a while ago a new environment under CentOS5/VM WKS/Windows XP
I am currently setting up a new VM (with Nessus and other tools), with
Fedora Core 7/VM WKS/Win XP
The nice thing with the last version of VM Workstation is that you can
migrate from VM WKS to VM SVR without too much hassle !

Technically : no particular issue with any of the above mentioned combos,
nor with the conversion/migration process (WKS --> SVR)
Performance might be an issue though. Nessus is *much* slower within a VM
than if it was running natively under Linux on any hardware platform.

I personally choose the VM concept because of the flexibility it offers,
whereas performance was not necessarily my top concern.

These were my 2cts ...
