Sorry, its been a long day already :( This is on RHEL4/x86 and it's a direct feed. The version is 3.0.6 and I'm betting the last time it updated the plugins (to version 200704141515) was when I updated to that version. I *have* seen this before, but it was when the server couldn't take the load (primarily due to lack of RAM) and several things didn't work right. However, load is light and there is plenty of RAM.
I did prevent new scans from being initiated before lunch so I should be able to restart the service now and see if that changes things.
