IIRC correctly, detached scans can be run through the lightning console (I
think it's called tenable security center now... Ron or Renaud will likely
be on shortly to confirm or deny). I'm not sure it's exactly the same thing,
but it's a piece of software holding onto the scan so you don't have
to. been a couple years since i was able to lay my hands on it though, so it
might have changed.
the last time i asked about it (no doubt in the archives of the list), I was
informed that detached scan functionality was a fairly serious hit on
performance. It was removed in the 3.0 series, IIRC. I'm sad to see it go as
well.

You might also look at Scavenger or Inprotect for handling this stuff.
Scavenger is a nice front end produced by the guys at Argonne National Lab.
Inprotect is a nice front end produced by several knowledgeable open source
folks. Both are open source. Both are web based. Scavenger has a nicer
interface for managing results, Inprotect has a nicer interface for managing
scans.
