I find Macromedia's tutorials and info to be some of the best. They
previously did a whole series on e-learning which I think is exactly
what you might want. I couldn't find, it but take alook at this

Subject: ALA CIPA trial

It appears that the results of the ALA trial related to CIPA will have
impact on the application of CIPA in schools.

Here are several articles:

http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/news/editorial/2999883.htm

http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,51591,00.html

http://news.com.com/2100-1023-876406.html

Note from these articles the two strong conclusions:

No filtering product will function within the definitions of the law.
Translation -- there is no filtering product on the market that blocks
obscene material, child pornogrpahy, and material harmful to minors,
which are the kinds of materials that must be blocked to be in
compliance with CIPA.

""Every witness has testified that the statute can't be applied
according to its own terms," U.S. District Judge Harvey Bartle said
during closing arguments."

However the more important consideration that also appears to have
emerged is the concern expressed by the judges about delegating
responsibility to companies that are protecting what they are doing as
trade secrets.

""The nameless and faceless," intoned U.S. District Judge John Fullam.
"What right does the government have to require this kind of filtering
system?" "

If you have not paid close attention to this trial, you might have
missed the news that N2H2 intervened early on in the trial and asked the
judges to close the hearing so that information about its processes
would not be publicly disclosed. This is a company whose product is in
30% to 40% of US public schools. And they are protecting all that they
are doing as trade secrets. Seeking to close the hearing was probably
the worst mistake the company could have made. But I am very glad they
did so. Because their actions pointed out the very real problems with
the manner in which these products function.

This is the factor that will be the downfall of these products in
schools. Public institutions simply cannot delegate responsibility to
companies when there is no public accountability for the manner in which
these companies are functioning. The fact that several of these
companies also have marketing relationships and other alliances with
conservative religious organizations simply heightens the concerns about
the basis upon which these companies are making blocking decisions.

Reportedly, the decision of the court will be published quickly.
However, the ruling will only impact libraries. This, unfortunately,
leaves schools in a difficult situation with respect to compliance with
CIPA.

However, schools districts will also have to consider something else
when this ruling comes out. Assuming the concerns about inappropriate
delegation are contained in the ruling -- which I have no doubt they
will be -- any school district using such products will be in the
position of the possibility of facing a local challenge due to the
inappropriate delegation of authority to these companies. This
delegation will be especially concerning if the company is also shown to
have alliances with other organizations that may be affecting their
decision-making, such as alliances with conservative religious
organizations. All students will need to demonstrate is a pattern of
overblocking that raises the potential of biased blocking to support an
injunction against the district that is using one of these products.

Although most census records are only available for a fee, there are some
available at http://www.usgenweb.net/. This is a nationwide project to put
all records on the web and each state and county is at various stages of
completion. I used Smith County Texas and it has census records on line
from 1920 back to 1860. You can download images of the pages for free.
They are not necessarily easy to read, but can be. You just have to find
which page to look for.

They also have marriage, death, and birth records. There are many of the
cemeteries listed with names and dates of those buried. Some counties have
little information and others have more complete.

This is a great site for genealogy and is totally free.

Charlotte,

The links on this page are meant for K - 3, but some of the sites have activities that
would
also be appropriate through grade 5.

I am currently working on an article on word processing that might also be of
interest. Check

Greetings!

We have created a 'game' from tests released by Virginia's Department of
Education. Although intended to test Virginia's students, the amount of
out-of-state traffic the site is receiving indicates that others are finding
the materials useful. The site currently contains materials in the following subjects:

  Algebra I
  8th Grade Math
  8th Grade Science
  8th Grade Technology
  5th Grade Math
  5th Grade Science
  5th Grade Technology

The Algebra I test contains materials from Virginia's 2000 Standards of
Learning test. All other subjects contain materials from the 2000 and 2001
Standards of Learning tests. All materials are used with the permission of
the Virginia Department of Education.

The practice tests can be found at this address:

Have fun!
