Exploring The Future of Learning is a unique, hands-on, in-depth
exploration of today's most promising emerging technologies and
pedagogies-- and the opportunities and challenges they bring to the
future of learning. The event combines "The Exploratory", an interactive
technology and learning exploration laboratory, with "The Symposium", a
series of in depth discussions, facilitated by a group of renowned
thinkers in learning and technology.

The Exploratory will feature over 50 projects in eleven Pavilions, each
focused on a specific Curriculum, Technology, or leadership theme. The
Pavilions are being created by leaders like Elliot Soloway and Cathie
Norris, Bob Tinker, Stan Silverman, Margaret Riel, Bill Mitchell, Robin
Bargar and Tom Kalil, who are bringing together a rich variety of
projects representing the best in emerging technologies and learning
applications that participants will be able to actively engage with and
in. 100 student leaders from around the globe will also be participating.

The Symposium, which follows, will be centered on participants (you) and
your ideas, analysis, issues, and questions about the future of
learning. These discussions will be led by another group of outstanding
thinkers and leaders, including Linda Roberts, Tom Carroll, Margaret
Honey, David Dwyer, Karen Billings and Ed Lazowska. Esther Dyson will
confer with the discussion leaders and present a report on the outcomes
at the Closing Plenary session.

Is That All?
We hope not. We hope that it is just the beginning of an ongoing
conversation and collaboration by people who care about the future of
learning and the roles that students, teachers, education leaders,
technologies, organizations and companies will play in that future. A
conversation designed to build a community, and generate ideas,
analysis, reflection, action, and change. A conversation about the many
possible futures of learning and how we create the future we want rather
than watch others create a less preferred, less powerful, less learned future.

Exploring the Future of Learning is co-hosted by Advanced Network &
Services, the non-profit organization that created the internationally
renowned ThinkQuest Programs, and the University of Washington.

=================Special Announcement from ISTE HyperSIG===============

Dear Educator,

We would like to invite you join the distinguished panel of International
judges who will evaluate the projects submitted to Multimedia Mania 2002,
an award sponsored by HyperSIG, Special Interest Group for Multimedia of
the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). We are asking
educational professionals who have experience in developing or evaluating
multimedia to give a few hours of their time to help with this exciting
project. See details about the award at:

http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/mmania.how.html

If you want to be considered, then you must agree to the following:

1. Be available from May 13 to May 24 to perform approximately 2 - 5 hours
of evaluation on your computer.

2. Evaluate 2 - 5 multimedia projects using the rubric now on-line at
http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/rub.multi.htm
<http://www.ncsu.edu/midlink/rub.multi.htm>
We will match your computer platform, grade level and subject area
preferences and mail appropriate projects to you on a custom CD-ROM.

3. Use our Web form to submit the results of your evaluations to us before
midnight on May 24.

4. In rare circumstances, we may telephone you shortly after May 27 for
follow-up questions or clarification.

If you are selected, in order to thank you for volunteering your valuable
time, we will provide you with a complimentary copy of the winning projects
on the official Multimedia Mania CD. If you plan to attend NECC, you will
also be invited to a special session to meet the winning teams.

Subject: Forum to discuss US History resources

New ideas, resources, and thoughts regarding teaching US History will be
the focus of the Social Studies forum, set for 8 p.m. Eastern (5 p.m.
Pacific) this Wednesday (4/10/02) in TAPPED IN
(http://www.tappedin.org).

Join us as we investigate this important topic. As always, Social
Studies forum sessions are open to teachers on the elementary as well as
secondary level.

And, as always, TAPPED IN help desk personnel will be onhand to assist
new users. It's recommended that new users log in at least 10 minutes
prior to the session in order to have help desk personnel assist and get
the user to the right location for the forum.

(Note: Last Sunday, many users changed their clocks to "spring forward"
to Daylight Savings Time. It's recommended, too, that users check the
"Time Zone friendly" TAPPED IN calendar,
http://www.tappedin.org/cgi-bin/calendar/calendar.cgi, to make sure
exactly what time the forum meets in their time zone.)

Persons with questions or wanting more information are invited to e-mail
Michael Hutchison off-list.

Sincerely,

Michael Hutchison
