WORLD'S LEADING RELIEF ORGANIZATIONS USE LATEST TECHNOLOGY
TO COMBAT AFGHAN REFUGEE CRISIS

UNHCR, Christian Children's Fund Believe Innovative Tool Will Increase
Awareness and Donations for Afghan Refugees, Disaster Victims World-Wide

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 22, 2001) - At a National Press Club Morning
Newsmaker event, nonprofit organization Relief Interactive (REACT), joined
by several leading relief organizations, today announced that it will use
innovative technology to allow online newsreaders improved access to the
world's leading relief organizations, which should provide more aid to
man-made and natural disaster victims faster.

Getting enough aid in time can often mean the difference between life and
death. While online contributions to date have made some difference in the
resources available to relief organizations, there is much room for
improvement. REACT aims to bridge that gap. "Emergencies don't wait for
government bureaucracies to react," said John Fredriksson, Senior Government
Coordinator for UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. "We need to mobilize
resources on the front lines in real time. Private contributions are
essential because they are available right away. REACT's website is a tool
that has the potential to give people accurate information quickly, and
simultaneously allow them to donate immediate assistance where it is most
needed."

The REACT website and newslink uses "one click" technology to connect
Internet news readers with up to the minute information on the world's
crisis relief efforts and the ability to donate to leading relief
organizations instantly.

Daniel Wordsworth, a recently returned field-worker from Afghanistan with
the Christian Children's Fund knows first-hand how critical the quantity and
timing of resources can be for disaster response. "When we first got into
Northern Afghanistan in late November, we saw people who were hungry, living
in unbelievable conditions, and very much in need of assistance from the
world community. A few very dedicated aid agencies were working day and
night, overwhelmed by the great need. Compounding the problem was the fact
that most of the aid organizations were working around Kabul, the hub of
media and humanitarian activity. Northern Afghanistan was, and to an extent,
is still a forgotten land. Especially in situations like this, on line news
sources are crucial in getting the word out about a humanitarian catastrophe
that otherwise could be overlooked."

Wordsworth, director of programs for CCF, has served on CCF's emergency
response teams in East Timor following the vote for independence, in India
following the devastating earthquake in 2001, New York following the Sept.
11 attack and in Afghanistan.

REACT's technology can significantly improve the public response to
international disaster by applying simple, interactive technology in the
place where many people go to find out about breaking disaster-news:
Internet news websites. A newslink button in the online news article allows
readers to view a complete listing of relief organizations responding to the
crisis, get details of each organization's relief activities, and make
secure online donations - all with one click.

REACT's site is linked with a growing list of relief organizations that
respond to crises around the world including American Jewish World Service,
Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, United States Association for UNHCR,
United States Fund for UNICEF, International Rescue Committee, Oxfam
America, CARE, World Relief, Americares, Christian Children's Fund, MAP
International, Mercy Corps, American Refugee Committee, International
Medical Corps, International Relief Teams, Women's Commission for Refugee
Women and Children, Action Against Hunger, and United Way International. To
ensure quality, REACT's affiliate relief organizations are members of
InterAction, the largest alliance of US based International and humanitarian
NGOs.

With its website fully operational REACT is now in the process of recruiting
media organizations to utilize the REACT service.

"In simpler times and places the response to a house catching fire was for
each individual in the village to come running with a bucket of water. The
more people who knew about the fire and the faster they got there, the
better the chance the house would be saved", comments Dr. Brady Brown,
President and Founder of REACT. "The Internet has the potential to shrink
the whole world down to village-size, and REACT can provide a way for
everyone to quickly know about the hotspots around the world and to
contribute their bucket of water. I want to call on media organizations and
individuals alike to take advantage of REACT's utility and make this vision
a reality."

REACT's technology partner, Ventera Corporation of McLean, VA, has invested
more than a quarter of a million dollars to develop the technology to
implement the REACT vision. NGEN, an IT firm in Washington, DC is
contributing significant resources to host the REACT website.

Hi Everyone!

The symbol of Jerusalem is a lion.
Sponsored by the Jerusalem municipality, 82 lion
sculptures have been created by local artists and
have been put on display in public places around
Jerusalem. The sculptures will be on display for
the next 6 months and then they will be auctioned
off, and the proceeds will go to Jerusalem charities.

Citizens, visitors and tourists will find the sculptures
refreshing and entertaining. For those of you who
will not be visiting the city in the near future, I have
taken over 120 pictures of the "Lions of Jerusalem"
and have placed them on the web. The address of
the online picture exhibit is:

Enjoy!

Friends,

Elena Larikova (Russia) is moderating our newest Kidproj project called
"Music of Our World."

She writes:

Do you like music?! Sure you do. Have you ever thought about your favorite
music and why do you listen to it? How many styles are there in countries
all over the world? Why do people join fan clubs and shout their heads off
at concerts? Why do others prefer classical music or folklore? What music
do YOU like? Tell us, we are very interested!!!

The project takes place from April 22 through May 29. During the project
students will:

1. Introduce themselves
2 Discuss "Our Favorites":
     *what music you listen to
    *who your favorite singers are
    *why you listen to
*if you friends like the same music
*if you have joined a fan club
3. Discuss "Music of Nature"
4. Discuss "Music that Unites the World"

Student work will be published in Kidlink's KidSpace. To learn more about
the project and how to register, visit the project website:

Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence in the Workplace
The Family Violence Prevention Fund presents information about its program
concerning domestic violence in the workplace. The fund explains that
domestic violence can follow victims to their place of employment through
harassing phone calls, absences because of injuries, and decreased
productivity because of emotional stress.
http://fvpf.org/programs/workplace/

Problem: Predictors of Domestic Violence
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) presents
information on signs that indicate someone potentially could be abusive. The
signs include growing up in a violent family; using force or violence to
solve problems; abusing alcohol or other drugs; using physical force; and
talking of using guns, knives, or other lethal instruments against people.
http://www.ncadv.org/problem/predictors.

Know Your Rights: Domestic Violence
The American Bar Association (ABA) presents a public education brochure
entitled "Know Your Rights: Domestic Violence," published by the Division
for Public Education of the ABA. The brochure discusses how to get emergency
help in a domestic violence situation, the court order of protection, and
where to find a lawyer.
http://www.abanet.org/domviol/knowrights.pdf

What Is Battering?
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) presents
information on battering, a pattern of behavior used to control another
person through fear and intimidation. Acts of domestic violence fall into
such categories as physical battering, sexual abuse, and psychological
battering. Battering episodes often escalate and can become
life-threatening, with such behaviors as choking, breaking bones, and the
use of weapons.
http://www.ncadv.org/problem/what.htm

Safety Tips for You and Your Family
The American Bar Association presents a public education brochure entitled
"Safety Tips for You and Your Family." The brochure offers safety tips for
victims of family violence. The safety tips cover what to do in an
emergency, how to protect oneself at home and outside the home, how to be
safer at work, and how to make the children safer.

Problems Associated with Children's Witnessing of Domestic Violence
The Violence Against Women Office of the U.S. Department of Justice and the
Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA) at the University of
Minnesota presents the full text of the article entitled "Problems
Associated with Children's Witnessing of Domestic Violence," by Jeffrey L.

Why Do Women Stay?
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) presents
information on why women stay in violent relationships. For some women,
leaving a batterer may be dangerous. Leaving can also mean living in fear,
losing child custody, and losing financial support. Factors that may
influence her to stay include fear of and intimidation by the batterer and
lack of access or knowledge about safety and support.
