Art Museum of the Americas

http://www.museum.oas.org/

"The Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States was
established in 1976 by resolution of the OAS Permanent Council in tribute to
the two-hundredth anniversary of the independence of the United States, host
country of the OAS.The historic building housing the Museum was designed
by noted architect Paul Cret in 1912 as the residence for the Secretaries
General of the Organization of American States. It is Spanish colonial in
style with white walls, iron grilles, a red tiled roof and a loggia
decorated with richly colored tiles in patterns modeled after Aztec and
Inca legends. Today as a Museum, the building provides a warm and intimate
atmosphere to enjoy art."

the most influential figures in musical theatre history. In
addition to lesson ideas & learning activities, it offers a
biography of the composer-lyricist, a timeline of his career, & the

paint over the previous images; rather, he incorporated each layer
into the subsequent one, believing that, "What comes out in the end

http://plagiarism.phys.virginia.edu/links.html

In a recent posting someone mentioned a free plagiarism detection site
called Plagiserve.com. Before you rush headlong into using that site I
think you should read the concerns expressed at the bottom of the page at
the above link. It is interesting to note that the owners of plagiserve and
edutie also were involved in a few of the web's most notorious paper mills!
Nice gig - invite people to submit papers to be checked against online
papers while stocking your own shelves with the submissions.

I used the whois service myself a few months ago to check this alleged
connection and I saw it with my own eyes. After being caught they changed
things so that this connection odesn't show. OR, as the above article
contends, they had a true change of heart and are no longer in the term
papers for sale business. Possibly. You can make up your own mind. But, at
least you should know of the history of those two sites before you make up
your mind.

From: Nancy Willard <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: TEACHABLE MOMENT - predators online
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am assuming that most folks have heard the story of the unfortunate
young girl who was strangled by a predator she met online. There is a
*really excellent* story on this incident that I think it very important
for both adults and students to learn from. The article is on the
CTNow.com web site. The reporter interviewed some of the victim's
friends and received insight that definately should be shared.
http://www.ctnow.com/news/local/hc-christina0522.artmay22.story?coll=hc-headlines-local.

Another story that provides interesting insight is:
http://www.nando.net/technology/story/410093p-3268952c.html

Look at the following elements:

1. Young person who is already "at risk." Young people who are "at risk"
generally are the ones most likely to be "at risk" from online
predators. Predators are most likely to target teen girls who are
already "at risk" because of family concerns. Some will also target
teen boys who are struggling with sexual orientation issues. So pay
attention to "at risk" kids, they are the most vulnerable to the "sweet
talk" they will receive from predators. We need to tell our kids every
day how much we love them because if they do not know hear and know
about real love, they will mistake the "come-ons" from predators as the
love they are missing.

2. Not spending time with friends in the "real world" -- spending far
too much time with folks in cyberspace. The use of the Internet by young
people MUST be balanced with lots of interaction and activities with
friends in the real world. Anytime that a young person appears to have
gotten "sucked up" into cyberspace, this is a clear signal of danger.

3. A teen girl who is spending lots of time on the Internet AND starts
presenting herself as a sex object both in person and online. These two
factors combine to create a major clue that this child has become
involved in online sex activities that will have a major potential of
leading to in-person involvement. Look at the picture that this child
posted of herself!

4. Lack of adult guidance and education. This information comes from the
second story. "Her aunt, Shelly Riling, said Christina told her she had
been in a chat room and "people were saying these weird things," so she
decided not to return. "I said, 'Honey, that's a very responsible
decision that you made because I wanted to have a talk with you about
that, but now I won't have to because now you understood on your own,
and I'm really proud of you,'" Riling said on NBC's "Today." " The NRC
report on Youth, Pornography, and the Internet concluded that we should
NOT place primary reliance on "technology quick fixes" but should focus
our efforts on education and supervision. There was insufficient
education and supervision of this young girl. Note also the subtlety of
a clue that the child provided to her aunt: "People were saying these
wierd things." Parents and educators need to be responsive to what can
be very subtle clues and remain engaged.

5. Friends knew, but apparently did not tell a responsible adult. It is
probable that in most cases where a young person has gotten involved
with an online predator, their friends either knew or had strong
suspicions that this was occurring. We have made great strides in
addressing concerns of school violence by convincing kids to break the
"tattling barrier." One effective educational strategy we can employ is
to educate teens about the importance of recognizing when their friends
are getting into online danger situations and convincing them of the
importance of telling a responsible adult about their concerns.

Now go to this story:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/cyber/tech/2002/05/21/kids-internet.htm.

6. Continued misplaced reliance on "technology fixes" and "law
enforcement," rather than focusing on education and supervision and
involvement in the lives of our kids. We are not going to save kids
like Christina with a kid-friendly domain or greater wire-tapping
privileges. I DO advocate the establishime of safe (non-commercial)
Internet spaces for younger children. But Christina was 13. She is not
going to spend her time online in kid-friendly spaces. Trying to keep
her out of chat rooms would also not have been a successful strategy.
She needed the adults and friends in her life to have recognized the
dangerous pathway that she was on and to have provided the love,
education, guidance, and supervision that are the only strategies that
will truly address the concern of predators online.

If you are an educator, especially in middle school and high school,
please take advantage of this teachable moment. I suggest presenting the
first article and engaging the students in an analysis of the danger
signs and a discussion about what they might be able to do if the notice
a friend of theirs who may be walking down the same path. If any of your
students come up with written guidelines on this issue, I would really
appreciate receiving these -- and I would appreciate permission to post
these on the site I am working on to support my book.

Please feel free to distribute and publish this document for non-profit
educational purposes.
