Tavis Smiley Foundation Awards Hewlett-Packard Computer to Essay Contest Winner

Los Angeles, CA - June 24, 2002/Xpress Press/ - The Tavis Smiley Foundation
will
deliver a Hewlett-Packard Computer to Robbie Moore, a student at Albert Monroe
Magnet Middle School, as the winner of the "Tech Yourself" essay contest for
Los
Angeles County middle school students. Additionally, the middle school will
receive a free HP computer, printer, and digital camera as part of the overall
grand prize. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at
Albert Monroe Magnet Middle School.

The "Tech Yourself" Essay Contest was part of the "Blacks in Technology:
E-Inclusion - Making a Digital Difference" Expo series which began on February
2
at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Students entered the contest by writing
essays on the topic "How Technology Can Change My Community". To be eligible
for the contest, students had to be Los Angeles County residents and middle
school students as of January 1, 2002.

The winning essay penned by Mr. Moore addressed the many positive uses of
technology: "It has helped make people more productive and freed individuals to

explore such endeavors as art and science without having to worry about simple
survival."

The Tavis Smiley Foundation received the computer through Hewlett-Packard, the
national sponsor of the "Blacks in Technology" Expo Series. The goal of the
symposium series is to examine the critical factors underlying the problem of
the "digital divide" and to bring the nation's leading technology companies in
direct contact with the increasing number of African American entrepreneurs,
professionals and consumers. This event has taken already taken place in
three
cities: in Los Angeles on February 2-3, in Atlanta on March 16-17, and in New
York on May 10-11. All together, the series has attracted approximately 25,000

guests. The final stop for the technology tour will take place in Chicago at
the Chicago Navy Pier on August 10-11.

From its base of operations in Los Angeles, the Tavis Smiley Foundation
operates
the Youth to Leaders (Y2L) program. The cornerstone program of the foundation,

Y2L focuses on preparing young people for leadership through a series of
conferences that provide in-depth information on issues that are directly
impact
young people and help youth develop ways in which they can address these
issues.
The goal is to identify, develop and encourage tomorrow's leaders.

A note about spaceship spotting: On June 11th we released a story "Watch out
for
Spaceships" (see http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/11jun_spaceship.htm)
describing how North Americans could see the International Space Station and
the
shuttle Endeavour flying over their backyards this week. The story contains a
list of suggested spotting times for selected US cities. Please note that such

predictions can change -- usually by a few minutes, but sometimes more -- as
the
date of the flyby approaches. Check your favorite tracking web site (several
are mentioned in the article) on the day of the flyby for the most precise
estimate. --Tony Phillips

How Not to Drive

http://hellsgate.online.ee/%7Emait/fahrschule.swf

"One of the most entertaining Flash movies in recent memory may also be
one of the most simplistic. Yes & No demonstrates the right and wrong ways
to get around the world's highways, proving along the way that the nice guy
does always finish last, especially on the road."

 From today's Benton headlines.. -ac

FASTER CONNECTION ALLOWS USERS TO DO MORE
A new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project revealed that
broadband users to do more than surf the Internet, they become online
contributors. In the recent survey nearly 6 of 10 broadband users reported
creating Web sites and sharing photos and other online media. Broadband
users were twice as likely as dial-up users to have their own Web sites. Joe
Laszlo, an analyst with Jupiter Media Metrix said the Pew findings
corresponded with Jupiter's research, " When you have that broadband
connection, one of the things you want to use it for is sharing things,
whether photo albums or personal Web pages." The Pew report also revealed
that 82% of broadband users are online daily versus 58% of dialup users.
Thirty-seven percent of broadband users surveyed say that watch less TV and
31% shop less in stores.
