I. Feature Article: Veteran Teachers Share Hints & Tips About
Parent-Teacher Conferences
--------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the most important things to remember is to be confident in
yourself as an educator because you are the expert. Whether you have
years of experience or not, you have been well trained in your field of
expertise. This should be tempered with a human quality and
acknowledgement that we all make mistakes. Teaching is a life-long
learning experience and an art. It is an area of trial and error,
reflection, and modification. The major advantage to new teachers today
is the wealth of expertise and information at their fingertips and with
far less isolation. Teachers are always ready to share their experience
and knowledge.

In this TeacherTalk Discussion, veteran teachers share their experiences
and post tips for new teachers. Are you a new teacher? Then use this

Subject: K12>Safari Alert

From: Lisa Mann [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

I thought you might want to know that Microsoft Press has joined
O'Reilly & Associates and Pearson (Addison-Wesley Professional, Adobe
Press, Cisco Press, Macromedia Press, Prentice Hall PTR, Peachpit
Press, Sun Microsystems Press, Que, Sams) in presenting technical books
online through Safari. O'Reilly has over 400 books available on
Safari; Pearson also has over 400 books; and Microsoft will start
immediately with 16 titles available on Safari, with more to come.

PC Magazine called Safari a Top 100 (Undiscovered) Web site. "These are
the best computer manuals around, and that now, for a small fee, you
can access them online."

PC World said:
"Hunting for tech information just got easier with Safari Tech Books
Online, a subscription site with the digital versions of more than 600
books from publishers such as O'Reilly & Associates and Addison-Wesley.
The books are fully searchable, and you can annotate pages as you read
them. Server-based bookmarks give you quick access to pages from any PC
connected to the Net. You can run multibook searches with keywords and
preview sections of any book before subscribing to it. You can save
books to disk or print them out (though you can't download them to an
electronic-book device). The best part: Every 30 days you can swap any
or all titles in your account for new ones, so you can trade up from
introductory titles to advanced ones, for example. Subscription rates
are based on the number of books you buy. Each title is assigned a
point value of one to three points, with a minimum five-point
subscription costing $10 a month (pith helmet not included)."

Some of the features that have made Safari one of the few successful
online book ventures include the ability to search for key topics and
code, browse more than 20 technical categories and read the full text
of books right from your desktop. Safari's search provides
relevancy-ranked results, helping users to quickly zero in on the
information they need. Users who have subscribed to a book can then
peruse the full text of relevant titles, chapters and sections. The
service gives subscribers the ability to bookmark, make notes, and cut
and paste code directly, saving time and eliminating programming
errors.

What users have said:
"I love how Safari allows me to access new books each month depending on
my needs. The search facility is excellent and the presentation is
topnotch. It is one heck of an online technical library."
--Eric Winslow, Economist, System Administrator, Web Master-Programmer

"I like being able to search the books and quickly find the information
I need. I also like to login and access it from where I happen to be
that day. I don't have to carry 20 books for reference to the client
site." --Keith Watts, Development Manager

"Things change in a hurry, and there's no way I can have enough books
on my bookshelves to cover all of the things I need to learn something
about. That's why Safari is so great. With Safari, I can subscribe to
books on the topics I want to know about right away. I can either read
through the book from the start or I can skip around by using the
online table of contents and index. If it's a topic that I want to buy
a book about, I can use Safari to compare different publishers' books
and choose the one I like best. That last part is especially handy
because we don't have a complete technical bookstore in my city."
--Jerry Peek, author of "Unix Power Tools" and
"Learning Unix for Mac OS X"

Subject: PROJ> Random act of kindness

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 18:07:34 EDT

Join us in recognizing children's acts of kindness. Let us know when
children in your class should be celebrated for going the extra distance
by
being kind to one another. Too many times children's good deeds go
unnoticed. Let this be the first step in their successes!

Each month you will submit a paragraph about one student in your class
who
performed a "Random act of kindness". We will post the child's act and
picture (JPEG or GIF), if you wish, to celebrate him or her. You must
send in your entry by the 25th of each month.

Hopefully we will give all children the incentive to just be nice!
