Breaking scripts and such that might depend on the behaviour, however broken it
is.

I'd say there should be a configure option to choose the new/old style
implementation. I'm on the fence about what the default should be. Give that it
changes behaviour, I'd lean slightly towards defaulting to the old behaviour.
