All your "guesses" were correct.
I fixed the links so they will all point to the new version, and that
fixed the problem.

I'm guessing (1) you are on RedHat, and (2) you have the net-snmp rpm
AND a source version installed.

Do you see multiple versions of each library if you run this command?

        ls /usr/lib/*snmp* /usr/local/lib/*snmp*
