To run the agent on the console (rather than as a daemon),
the usual technique is to use

                        snmpd -f -L
or
                        snmpd -f -Le
(depending on version)

It's not clear whether that's what you mean?

'optind' should be set automatically by the option parsing code,
when dealing with options that take a parameter.
You shouldn't have to touch this yourself.
