It was removed because the functionality was not being used anywhere in the
agent. I don't think it was ever documented, so I'm surprised that anyone found
it, much less used it!

At any rate, the code is still there, so simply adding it to the Makefiles
should get you going.

As for alternatives, it's hard to say without knowing what you are doing.
