OK - my take on that is as follows:
- Any changes you wish to make to the README.solaris file are fine.
- If the "files and other stuff" are self-contained and only used for
creating this package, then it's probably still OK to add them as
long as they're put somewhere out of the way (e.g 'dist').
- If you need to touch the main Makefile structure, then you're
right - it's too late for 5.2
Rule of thumb - if a typo would affect
"./configure --whatever; make; make install"
then you need to tread carefully.
If it would only screw you up, then we don't care as much :-)
Wes may want to amend that (being somewhat more in touch with the
general feel of the project at the moment :-( )

That's your call. I'm fine either way.

No problem there either.
Again, the basic rule of thumb is that binaries should correspond to
a basic
"configure; make; make install"
build.
