OK - I've done a bit more digging, and the flag actually seems to be
  'm2c_create_fewer_files'

And this *does* work from the mib2c command line (though only using
the two-parameter '-S m2c_create_fewer_files' form)

But 'm2c_table_settable' doesn't. I'm wondering whether this is
because it's explicitly set in the 'm2c_setup_table.m2i' file ?
Might that be overriding the command-line setting?

It's not a major problem - I can work quite happily using
the default-xxx config files. But it's probably something
to add to the TODO list.
