That is an extra library to be linked in, increasing agent size for someone who
may be trying to minimize agent size.

That makes sense.

There are many rules here that may be considered unreasonable. I, for one,
would like to use some of the neat features of GNU tools (make and gcc). But
they aren't supported by the standard tools on some platforms, and the 'but GNU
tool are free' argument has never worked for me either.

But like you said, the GNU tools are not available on all platforms. The PSDK from Microsoft works on Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP and 2003. The 'supported' Microsoft OS's we currently list for Net-SNMP are all of those. Actually, we don't list 2003 but that is because we have not tested it. There's no reason it would not work.

So far the agent seems to.

Andy

If there was a feature that was available on all the Unix platforms, then it would make sense to use it.
