I run MSVC 6 only under duress. Its STL implementation is well known to have serious problems for multithreaded applications (See Meyers book on STL). MSVC7 is far superior and a pleasure to use. Catering to MSVC 6 is not only not worth the bother, it couold be considered a bad idea.
MSVC7's license is incompatible with the majority of open source licenses. See the conditions on distributing the necessary MSVC7 DLLs.
MSVC6's license is compatible.
This causes me no end of grief as I have MSVC7 and I can't link with DLLs from other projects built with MSVC6, and the other people can't rebuild with MSVC7 because the license will not let them distribute the DLLs.
I would much rather have MSVC6.
