You say, you send x and reply with x.y.z ?? are you polling a device
or are you writing an agent.

Neways, i guess what you mean to say is:
you poll for an index, the agent sends back an instance.  

There is no standard way to do this. All these happen in enterprise MIBS only.

So, need more details
