Actually, the problem was even more pilot error then that.  My config file was 
in the wrong place so snmpd never saw the "master agentx".  Thanks for 
following up.

The agent should create that file.  Is both the agent and the subagent
running as root?  Because that'll be necessary to create the socket in
the above location.
