Yeah, I'm with you. My primary environment was MacOS (I remember with
mutli-finder came out!), right up til OS X. At that point, my job was on Linux,
and I didn't feel like paying for upgrades anymore. I still by Apple hardware,
but I run Linux on it...

Yes, a lot of distributions ship net-snmp, without contributing back to us.
Actually, that reminds me of a funny story. I can't remember what release it
was, but a while back someone reported problems with the net-snmp-config
script. I booted up my MacOS install, and took a look at what they had shipped.
Much to my surprise, it was a config for an x86 machine! At the time, I was
shocked, but it all makes sense now...
