And the problem doesn't occur when building to match the Apple configuration. The problem shows up when enabling the embedded perl option. Finally got around to this this week (sorry for the delay!), and found (with some help from the #opendarwin crowd on freenode) that the default linker behaviour changed. 5.2.2 and beyond will automatically add this flag for you.
