I hurry to say that I have got it to work now (and I will check the status
of the bug when I get time).

What I did was to pick up the Debian-related patches from a recent
packaging that the Debian maintainer of net-snmp, Jochen Friedrich, made
to Debian experimental. It was based on CVS 2005-08-15, and it applies
equally well to the 5.2.2.pre3.

Are those patches specific to the Debian package building process or are there any additional patches of general applicability? We'd expect them to appear in our patch tracker, then.

What did not work for me was trying the sequence in the debian/rules files
for 5.2.1.2-3, without the related debian-specific patches - it failed.

Does a generic "./configure ... && make && make test" with 5.2.2.pre3 work out of the box for you?

It might be a good idea to add a few words to the INSTALL file about the
roles of libtoolize, aclocal and autoconf ...?

This isn't specific to net-snmp and is documented in the autoconf manual (where it belongs).
