Well, what does it do at the moment?
Is that vaguely sensible?   If so, why not settle on that
as the default behaviour, and provide an extended API to
support the more flexible configuration.

I'd also suggest that we support a choice of when to calculate
the next alarm time - either after running the callback routine
(as currently), or before (to avoid schedule creep).

It doesn't really matter what the default behaviour is,
(as long as it's sensible!) if the user can adjust it.
