I've fixed the build scripts so that they should be using a
compatible format (tested).

I wonder if we should be actually not using >100 char path names
though to be even more compatible.  There are multiple issues at hand
(one being a bug in Sun's tar implementation that gnu-tar refuses to
cave to since it's a bug.  GNU software drives me nuts much of the
time since they actually decrease portability).

I also think our tools use far too much memory and we need to strip
out features from our tools till we fall below the 640k recommended by
Bill Gates.
