I tested today using net-snmp 5.3.1 pre3 under e.g. HP-UX 10.20 where
you had the problems with gcc 4. For me it worked with that HP-UX
release but I use gcc 2.95.2

My bet is that there is a problem with the gcc specific copies of some
system include files or with the special define _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED.
