I happen to know that Joe's box is likely faster than many of our
others and I bet that this is the issue...

Joe, I think you're hitting a timing issue with the scripts.  That's
why there is a variation.

One of the biggest problems of the test system is how things
interact.  I'm betting that on your 2-cpu system (I think) the demon
is detaching but not finishing setup by the time the next command starts.
