There are many times that a missing feature could be considered a bug.
I'm mostly on the fence, but do fall on the side of "forward releases
only".  In part, because this behaviour has been around forever.  It's
not like it's something new that we introduced recently and decided it
was a mistake.  It was this way since the beginning of the wrappers
support and only recently has it actually been complained about (aside
from me internally thinking it wasn't the right way to do it; but I
wasn't very vocal about that).
