My personal belief is that these "remote operations" modules are not worth
bothering with.  The current code is not sufficiently clean or portable to be
useable, and we'd be better off omitting these implementations altogether.
They just cause more trouble than they're worth.
  The official line is that by shipping this code, it might encourage someone
to provide updates or fixes.  I'm not at all convinced by this - it would be
much less effort to simply re-implement these modules from scratch.  And
in the meantime we have a steady (if slow) stream of questions from people
who wrongly assume that the code is on a par with the rest of the agent.
  But I'm in a minority here, so until I can find the time to re-implement these
modules properly (or someone else does so), the current code stays to
cause confusion.

Patches to improve the current implementation would be welcomed
with open (if astonished) arms.
