However, at the end, net-snmp.spec has *not* been kept in the patches
branches, but only in MAIN. How to properly handle the differences
between the different branches in this situation? Will "%if" contructs
for the various branches in net-snmp.spec really ease maintenance?

Guess what? My vote is to add dist/net-snmp.spec back to the patches
branches instead.
